Phoenix of Santa Barbara’s 35th Anniversary and
Dedication of the Phoenix Totem
Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 was a memorable day for Phoenix of Santa Barbara, with more than 150 people attending Phoenix’s 35th anniversary event, and Dedication of the Phoenix Totem, a 12’ sculpture in the front garden of Phoenix House at 107 E Micheltorena in Santa Barbara.
Among those honored at the event were Carol Doane, one of the founders of the agency in 1972, Lillian Lovelace, who together with her husband, Jon, sponsored the Phoenix Totem, and Dan Chrynko, creator of the Phoenix Totem. Paul Fleischauer, Phoenix House’s first manager, paid tribute to Ada Schick Wing – who died a number of years ago. Ada was one of the main forces behind Phoenix of Santa Barbara coming into being. Ernestine DeSoto and her son Gilbert provided a Chumash blessing. JT Turner, Executive Director, coordinated the event. Board co-chairs for the event were John Hunt and Margaret DuCharme.
The Totem is titled “New Life Arising” and represents the spirit of recovery and renaissance in our work as a mental health agency, helping individuals with psychiatric challenges and addictions find their best path to a new and better life.
